In the next several months the Town of Vienna, VA will begin an effort, tackled every 5 years or so, to update the town’s Comprehensive Plan. Much of our zoning ordinances, upon which the plan is based, however, go back decades, to the 1960s, so we anticipate the town will be looking at them as well, to have them reflect the changing nature of our town. As you may know, NEVCA obtained a commitment from the town to prioritize development of new lighting standards in the Mill-Dominion CM zoned corridor, to ensure that garish/unshielded high intensity lighting at businesses does not spill over into residents’ properties. I anticipate there will be a number of other areas that residents will have an opportunity to weigh in on as well, at public hearings or just by emailing or calling our council members. I encourage everyone to keep informed of the issues being discussed and get involved.
Because the candidates for Town council are running unopposed this year, NEVCA did not hold a Candidate Forum. Inside these pages however you will find candidates’ answers to four questions posed by NEVCA’s board. Check it out. We encourage you to follow the candidates’ positions, engage them in issues important to you, and get out and vote on Tuesday, May 1. VOTING will take place at the Vienna Community Center.
NEVCA’s next Membership Meeting will be held on Thursday May 17th at 7:30 at the Vienna Community Center, 120 Cherry St. SE. The featured speaker will be Cindy Petlac, the Town of Vienna’s Director of Planning and Zoning, who will discuss topical issues and upcoming planning efforts. This is a great opportunity to learn about what is being planned and to ask questions. Annual election of NEVCA officers will be held, and door prizes will be awarded courtesy of Great Harvest Bread Company on Church Street. All members of the community are welcome to attend!
NEVCA has been blessed by the many able and committed people who serve as officers on the board or lead our committees. In particular, I want to thank Sonya Arrington for her service as our treasurer. She has been instrumental in streamlining those duties and offering innovative ideas to make the association function better. Sadly, she will be moving from the area soon so this is an appeal to anyone who would like to serve as association treasurer to let me know before election of officers May 17. There is a need to fill the vacant post of NE Vienna Commercial Development Review Committee as well. Again, just contact me if you would like to serve. In a few short months, Shawn Dilles has had a major impact leading NEVCA’s NE Vienna Parks Committee. Read his piece in these pages to learn the good things going on!
